Geschichte & Architektur

Die Viktoria-Kaserne wurde 1870–1873 als preußische Militärkaserne erbaut und prägte lange das Viertel an der Stresemannstraße. Das Backsteingebäude mit seinen markanten Türmen und Innenhöfen ist eines der wenigen noch erhaltenen Militärbauten dieser Epoche in Altona. Nach militärischer Nutzung diente es im 20. Jahrhundert unter anderem als Unterkunft für Geflüchtete, als Ausbildungsstätte und als Zwischennutzung für Kreative.

fux eG & kreative Nutzung

Heute ist die Kaserne Sitz der fux eG, einer Genossenschaft aus Künstler:innen, Handwerker:innen, Initiativen und kleinen Unternehmen. Über 200 Mitglieder haben sich hier zusammengeschlossen und nutzen Ateliers, Werkstätten, Proberäume und Büros. Das Projekt gilt als wichtiger Gegenentwurf zu kommerzieller Flächenverwertung und bietet langfristig gesicherte Räume für kreative Arbeit.

Vom Frappant zur Viktoria-Kaserne

Viele der handwerklichen und künstlerischen Betriebe, die früher im legendären Frappant in Altona ansässig waren – dort, wo heute das IKEA-Gebäude steht – fanden hier ein neues Zuhause. Mit Unterstützung der Stadt Hamburg entstand so ein lebendiges Zentrum, das den Verlust der alten Räume teilweise auffangen konnte und ein Stück kreative Altonaer Identität bewahrte.

Ein Blick in die Innenhöfe lohnt sich: Dort gibt es regelmäßig Ausstellungen, Flohmärkte, offene Ateliers und Veranstaltungen. Besonders schön ist es im Sommer, wenn die Höfe voller Leben sind.

History & Architecture

The Viktoria Barracks were built between 1870 and 1873 as a Prussian military complex and long shaped the area along Stresemannstraße. Its red-brick façade with towers and courtyards is one of the few surviving military buildings of this era in Altona. After military use, it served various purposes in the 20th century, including housing for refugees, vocational training, and temporary use by creative projects.

fux eG & creative hub

Today the building is home to the fux eG, a cooperative of artists, craftspeople, initiatives, and small businesses. More than 200 members share studios, workshops, rehearsal spaces, and offices here. The project is seen as a strong alternative to commercial property development, securing long-term space for creative work in Altona.

From Frappant to Viktoria Barracks

Many of the artistic and craft-based businesses once housed in the legendary Frappant building – located where IKEA Altona stands today – found a new home here. With support from the City of Hamburg, the Viktoria Barracks became a vibrant hub, helping to preserve a piece of Altona’s creative identity.
